I’ve been a fan of Ubiquiti’s line of UniFi APs since before the UAP-AC version 1 was released.  There have been lots of growing pains with the various releases of hardware and software.  The biggest issue was when the original UAP-AC Pro AP was released with a different vendor’s AC WiFi chip then their earlier equipment.  This really opened up the flood gates and after trying the UAP-AC at a few sites, I had to remove them and swap them out for Cisco’s WAP371, which although not perfect, more expensive and under powered, worked well enough 95% of the time.  (The other 5% they were almost unusable.)

Well, since that time Ubiquiti has changed back to their original WiFi vendor for AC, released UAP-AC Pro 2, fixed a lot of bugs and implemented 802.11r in their main-line firmware.  And the improvement is dramatic.

I haven’t done quantifiable tests on the new firmware but the real world results at three different sites with different use cases all showed huge improvements in coverage area and the ability to roam from one AP to another.

I would be interested in hearing other’s experiences with multiple access point installations of UniFi with 5.2.9 and 3.7.21.
